Justice leader forging South Africa’s new democracy
Justice Albie Sachs

Justice Albie Sachs’ involvement in the South African liberation struggle was defined by both his legal mind and his deeply personal sacrifice. After a car bomb planted by apartheid agents in Mozambique cost him an arm and his eyesight in one eye, his resolve only strengthened. He continued to work closely with Oliver Tambo, drafting the ANC’s Code of Conduct in exile, and later played a crucial role in the negotiations for a new constitution. Following the struggle’s success, President Nelson Mandela appointed Sachs to the Constitutional Court, where he shaped the legal future of the country he had so fiercely fought for.
