Ashish Thakkar founded the Mara Group at age 15 to support his family following the crisis in Rwanda, and was soon joined by his sisters, Ahuti Chug and Rona Kotecha, and father, Jagdish Thakkar. The family founded The Mara Foundation in 2009, as a social enterprise that assists emerging entrepreneurs throughout Africa, particularly young founders and women.

“I think the three of us, as siblings, are, even though there’s a massive age gap, we’re very different in our styles, which I think has been such a blessing, because we all have a very different way to look at things. We all have different strengths and we all strengthen each other’s weaknesses. At the same time, we’re extremely similar in terms of the purpose and the vision and what we want to achieve, so there’s never any rivalry, there’s really us complementing each other. We have the ability to debate about issues.”

“I think in everything we do truth is, you know, it’s paramount and love for one another, and I think there’s a lot of, you know, kind of love brings on a lot of trust and sincerity, transparency within us and I think compassion in the sense that, you know, it’s kind of not looking at, you know, how we’ve developed, but how do we make a change.”

Rona Kotecha

“He (Jagdish Thakkar) doesn’t focus on the negative. He’s always focused on the positive and I think, you know, it’s so, you know, it’s amazing to have someone like that in your life, that just focuses on the positive and says well, that’s happened, let’s move.”
